That's your stock wiring?  Wow.  

Mine sure starts with some heavy stuff, but... 10 GA to ig sw, 12 GA ig
sw to light sw, and 12 back to the fuse box (that's right, this circuit
is unprotected up to that point!) but then 16 GA to the bulbs, one wire
powers both filaments on high, and 16 back to who knows where for
ground.

Not any more, of course.  Those wires just trigger relays now.
