As another lister or two has mentioned, it is the cloning of the electronic
serial number (ESN) that is illegal, not the directory number (the number
people dial to reach a phone).
When the legitimate phone # cloning first became popular, it was performed
by indenpendent businessmen, making a very small income. However, the
cell phone dealers perceived this as a threat, and sought remedy in the form
of law enforcement.
Unfortunately, it seems that while capitalists moan and whine anout
government interference in their business, they are real quick to ask
the government to help them out when a competitor is sucking away
some of their business.
Thank God not all American businessmen are that kind of capitalist pig.
