I just replaced this part, so I have the part number handy. Bentley
calls the part "Operating Lever With Bushing" but VAG calls it
"Carrier", part number 893 837 287 D; it was $9.38.

What the parts guy failed to tell me, was that the "Carrier" wouldn't fit the
lock cylinder in my '90 90Q. I was supposed to also buy a new lock cylinder
for $18 and have it recoded. Anyone know what the heat sink-like fins on the
upper part of that lever or carrier are for?

This should be the same for any car with flush-mounted door handles ('88-91+?)
The old piece is made of cast white metal, and fatigues over time. The new
piece is stamped steel. You transfer the tumblers from your old lock to the
new cylinder so your key will still fit. Procedure is on my web page under
repair, body. The gear piece on top engages the alarm, and must be indexed
properly or you'll activate the alarm at the wrong point...
