1987 5K Turbo non-Q info
Haudi:
A relative needs a car, and a very nice '87 5K Turbo
is for sale. It's a one owner car with 132K miles,
Automatic Tranny, tornado red with black leather interior.
Owner has original paperwork, didn't realize how expensive
these cars were back then, he paid U$26,000 for it
new.
Car had been maintained at selling dealer since new,
at least until 1996 with certainty. The folder of
receipts from the dealer was shocking, to say the
least. $650 to change the bomb, $32 to charge a
battery, $375 to change belts...the receipts I
saw actually make Nasa $800 toilet seats seem
reasonable.
He'll take $1400 for the car. Newish tires, beautiful
paint and interior, Audi radio even works. Would have
bought it for the wife, but she detests driving an
automatic.
I have found the following:
Screen warning "OK" display on instrument cluster is dead,
there is the noise of a warning "beep", but since it beeps for
so many things, without the display I have no idea.
Temperature gauge, completely dead until the car gets to
operating temperature, then it goes to the temp reading
in one swipe.
When accelerating at full throttle, the car bogs or
hesitates around 4000 rpm, then picks up again.
Transmission: Sometimes when shifting into reverse it
takes a few seconds to engage. (not a normal delay)
Idles like crap after getting warm.
I have very little experience with the Turbo 5Ks. I'm
willing to "help" (read, do it an have one owed to me)
getting it in shape for him. BUT, I don't want to marry
either the car or the relative...later illegal in most States
except maybe Arkansas.
What else should I be checking? There were a few other
things, but those were common 5K problems I've dealt
with before. Please send any BTDTs or whatever
info may be helpful in deciding whether to buy
the car or not. The highest reading on the
boost was 1.3, is this a good sign? I tried the
archives, in vain, the search function on there
is useless.
BCNU,
... I haven't lost my mind; it's backed up on tape somewhere!
