Be careful... If you have high mileage on the original alternator (160K+ or so)
then you might want to
inspect the alternator. The copper on the commutator is paper thin and will wear
down to the epoxy.
The symptoms will be what you say as well, so a new regulator may not fix it.
Dan is right though, most commonly
it is the regulator, but if it doesnt fix it, inspect the alternator.
