transmission problem

me again with my front whell drive audi:))
am deperately after some more help
thought the clonking noise would have probabaly been the clutch so
have remove the gearbox and clutch to have a look.... can't really
tell but the clutch looks fine and still has some wear left in it.
I'll remind you of the symptoms again -
--loud vibrating / clonking noise at speeds over 70 mph
--stops when slight deceleration or acceleration
--seems to stop when taken out of gear ( not definite)
--when cruising at constant speed and then accelerating hard there
seems to be a very slight single clonk (this happens in any gear) -
just as if there is some play in the whole system
-- also car has done 211,000 miles( don't know if this would be a
factor
-- i've tried spining the imput shaft and can't feel any play.

Now i've seen that the clutch 'looks' alright am wondering if
the prob is my final drive, gearbox or someting to do with the link
from the drive shaft. Am wondering how i will determine which is the
problem. I have taken ages removing the gearbox and cltch so don't
fancy putting it back only to have to take it off again!
please, please help , am getting desperate, my hands (and now dads
heyboard), and my face are covered in oil with the cuts hurting like
mad and still am nowhere nearer the source of my babies problems
any kind (i mean any) advice is much apreciated
