I've got a '93 90S, some of the bulbs are red, some are
white. If they are red, I replace them with LED/resistor
combination. If white, I've use two seperated bulbs.
For soldered in white (clear) bulbs, I use a 60mA bulb
that can be found at Radio Shack. For bulbs that slide
in, and have two contacts at the base (you can slide in
either way, due to the way the contacts are) I've either
gone to a VW dealer, or just recently found some at
a local part chain called Champion. I believe the bulb
manufacturer was called EIK or EIS, can't remember
for sure, but I believe I still have the card at home, as
I only used one of the bulbs.
In my car, I've seen these "push-in" style bulbs used
in the high-mount brake light, dash switches, and
behind my manual climate control panel. Haven't
had the dash out yet, but I'll probably find them
there too.
