I agree with the post that mentions Galena. Another idea is to try southern
Wisconsin, the Kettle Morain area is nice. A day trip to the East Troy
Trolley museum would be cool. Another idea is to head a bit further west
from there and hit "The House On The Rock" (an indescribable tourist stop),
"the Cave Of The Mounds", and Taliesen (Frank Lloyd Wright's home and
studio), all near Spring Green. Those three would make a nice weekend
junket, out Friday evening, back Sunday evening.
As to "blasting" around in this neck of the woods, there's little problem on
the back roads, even in Wisconsin, as long as you use a good threat detector
like a V1. But be careful on the state highways and larger in Wisconsin,
the state cops consider folks from Chicago as a serious source of revenue.
