Automobile Magazine scans/ general warning
I hate to be a party pooper but everyone should be VERY careful of what you
do with scans! I know you have only the best intentions, but scanning is the
first step in STEALING someone's (or several peoples') copyrights. The
magazine probably has a disclaimer like: "copying any part of this publication
is illegal", and it ain't there just to use up space.
Is copyright important? Absolutely. It's as important as a patent is to an
engineer. Someone else made it and you are taking it; and for you liberty
freaks, copyright is in fact a constitutionally granted right. A real life
scenario? Let's say Audi likes Automobile's photographer's images so well,
they decide to buy them for posters, calendars, cards, or something else. Now,
how much do you think they're worth if they're plastered for free all over the
'net? And maybe some dealer blows them up for billboards around town? The
dealer is making money from them, how will the photographer compensated? These
examples are based on real events, by the way. Also, images that you scan and
alter, but are recognizable as similar to the original, are still violating
copyright.
Contact the magazine, or the photographer, tell them you want to post one of
their images on a web site that gets xxx hits per month, you will give photo
credit and it will be very low res.(72dpi). The price may be cheap, it may not
be. Some dimwit may just tell you to scan it yourself (record the
conversation, if they do)
_Please don't redistribute images that aren't yours by creation or copyright._
