Clutch Problem

Hello,

My '86 4kcsq has been sitting for three months.  The first two were due to my
job.  The last month was due to a bum starter.  I finally got the rebuild today
and installed it only to find out the clutch is not working.  What happened?  I
push it in, it returns, but I can not put the car in gear.  I tried forcing it
a bit, then noticed smoke in the engine compartment.  ANy ideas what I can do
to fix this?
