Re: ur-q blue smoke
Mike, and those others who have been kind enough to respod to this post so far:
This was a donor engine, good compression when purchased. No info on audi
remanufactured engines. I spoke to a fairly knowledgeable mechanic yesterday
about the car and we discussed compression testing. His view was that very
little info is gained by that test(instrument insensivity and non specificity of
the test,) especially when done in the car, unless you have a real problem,
which would otherwise be much more symptomatic. Given no obvious oil
consumption, no abnormal noises and no performance loss appreciated, his view is
it's the turbo seal or the valve seals, although recently done, which he states
can fail in this manner sometimes even when new. I am hoping he is right, but
will probably perform a compression anyway, and also remove enough to access the
intake area prior to the fuel distributor, looking for oil residue. I'll update
as it goes if anyone is still interested. The cumulative data on problem solving
these cars by experiences of others has been quite helpful to me. Rob Greene
