Check Engine Light

Hi: I have a 1993 Audi Quattro Wagon with 80,000 miles. The check engine
light has started coming on intermittently. This typically happens after
about 45 minutes to one hour of operation. The car also diesels when cold,
something it never used to do prior the light coming on. My understanding
is that this light indicates a problem with the emission controls. Is
there a particular aspect of the emission control system I should focus
on? One person I spoke with stated that I may just have a loose hose
although I can not find such a thing. Thanks.
