There should be quite a bit more than 1/8" of movement though ... you
probably didn';t pull hard enough.  If you look at the outer joint you can
see that it is meant to take up the angular changes of steering.  While the
inner joint can handle some angular change as well, it is primarily there to
make up the difference as the engine and suspension move around relative to
each other.
