Welcome to the wonderful world or Audi's. They are beautiful, wonderful,
masterful, complicated and exasperating beasts.  The air filter is one of the
worst (best) examples.  You are not crazy, you are just thinking like a
physicist and not an Audi engineer. Remember, service departments charge by
the hour.... not by the engineering. Enjoy your Golf.... but watch out for
Quattros in the snow, we will be on your tail :)
