Help, after-run fan

I just changed the valve cover gasket on my 4kcsq this weekend and in doing so
moved the after-run fan temp sensor to the back of the engine instead of over
the intake manifold. The fan no longer comes on after 1 and 5 minutes after
engine shutoff, like it used to. I have several questions:

1) What the heck does the after-run fan really do?
2) Is it really needed?
3) Am I going to damage my engine by moving the sensor (and not having it
run)?

Thanks in advance for any input. I do not miss the noise or the drain on the
battery so I am hoping to keep it like it is now.
