RE: new subscriber/v8 miles to go calculation
Well, based on your original statement I was going to tell you that the trip
computer needed to be replaced, it is my understanding that this is a common
problem on the V8 ... but from my experience the symptoms are the opposite.
When one starts the car the estimate for miles remaining is in the ballpark
... as long as there is over 3/8 tank remaining. While running the display
clicks down too quickly, eventually telling me that I'm out of gas when the
gauge is at half full. I did have a chance to characterize the effect on
the drive from Denver, and found that the display for the amount of fuel
consumed and the fuel gauge correlated to the amount of fuel I put in at the
next fill.
I believe Audi's solution was to replace the entire instrument cluster.
When I get the more pressing problems with the other cars fixed I may dig
into this one. Since your symptoms are quite different, you may simply have
a bad connection. The IC on the V8 is considerably more difficult to remove
than that for the Coupe GT, but it isn't impossible. The biggest hurdle is
the fact that you need to get around the airbag somehow. The dash is held
in place by screws hidden under the speaker grilles and behind the A/C
outlets.
For now I simply leave the computer set on fuel consumed so I don't have to
deal with it. At least you don't have to worry about the computer going to
a flashing '30' or 'E'!
