I had a very good mechanic (and friend) check out a car that had
supposedly had the transmission completely rebuilt. The owner was charged
~$1500, and as far as we could tell, all the crooked shop did was clean and
paint the bad transmission with it still in the car- overspray all over the
undercarriage was a hint. When the owner brought it back and complained,
they told him that it wasn't the transmission this time, it was the rear
end- another $800 to fix.
My friend the mechanic used to call this type of "wrenching" an SMS job-
clean it, paint it, and park it out under the Sun, the Moon, and the Stars
for a couple days....
