Not necessary, not "bad".  My own thinking is this, if you have to clean
something that's blocking airflow from the INSIDE of your IC, you are doing
that after putting in your new motor. :)

When I installed the MC engine into my ur-q, a number of parts 
went for a dip in the hot tank, including the IC. There was lots of 
gooey oil residue(tech term) on the inside which sure didn't help 
internal airflow. It came out a whole lot cleaner. I also spent time 
straightening out the fins on both the IC and oil cooler. A small 
flat blade screw driver works great.
