Since I was the only Quattro Club member to make it to lil' Talledega
this weekend, I guess it's on me to give you guys the report. For those
who haven't been on this track, it is a fairly slow, forgiving track
that is excellent for beginners like myself. Unfortunately, it is also
a rough, tire-eating monster. My RF and RR Potenza S-02 PP's are about
shot after a day of the track. I'd say I at least cut their lives in
half. Some people there, a guy in an M3 and a guy in a 3000gt VR4 in
particular, drove home on a spare. They both had cords showing on their
street tires. So I don't feel so stupid for not bringing a set of track
wheels now.
For the driver's school, turnout was low. We actually had a 1-1
drive/instructor ratio! I got tons of track time! There was a couple
of Z-cars, a Fireo, a Z28, a few m3's, a couple of 325 and 318's, an M5
and an M6. Also, a couple of people from the Vette club made it, so I
got to see how my A4 automatic FWD held its own against a lot of
different machines. On this slow track, I was killing a bunch of the
other rookies in their 350+ HP machines....felt pretty good. By the end
of the day, all the nay sayers who saw my 4 rings and just chuckled were
now saying, "Wow! Your car looks really good out there." I'm saying,
yeah, cause I just lapped you in the race-prepped vette. ;-) Raw
cubic inches don't make up for traction control and anti-lock brakes.
(Thank God for them, else we'd be pulling my A4 out of the woods I
fear.)
The word is, this track is supposed to be repaved VERY soon. Some were
saying our event was the last to be held before the resufacing. If that
is the case, I hope to see some more Q-listers out there next time.
>From what some of the instructors told me, this is a great track for
beginners. The guy holding the school, Reese Cox is going to keep me
posted next time they have one, so I want to see a bunch of quattro's
out there next time! I can't put everone to shame by myself!!!
