That's actually a _GOOD_ sign.

The idle problem could be a leaky hose that's intermittently opening
and closing, one of the sensors not connected or (odd, this) the
injector cooling fan thermoswitch.
The melted plastic object could be either a plug from the back of the
cam cover (found one in my Passat's engine) or just a dislodged and
cooked lump of black sludge.
