No experience with this, but common topic on the mother list. Audi sells
sacrificial plastic caps that set the depth for the ABS sensors; you install
the caps on the sensors, push them in fully to the stop, and the rotating
splines wears away the plastic, leaving the sensor at the proper distance from
the splines. Without the spacers, the metal splines that rotate past the
sensor quickly (first rotation?) destroy the expensive sensors.
Seems contrary to your Bentley quote; perhaps the '91 had a revised procedure?
I'd put the car on a lift, insert a sensor to the stop, and slowly rotate the
wheel. If anything rubs, you need the plastic spacers. I think the sensors
are less than a buck each; seems prudent to use them first, rather than risk
damage.
