There is a flap controlling the fresh air/recirculate function; the spring
and/or arm controlling this flap can break, causing a problem with
condensation on the windshield.
The flap is behind the glove box, and opens/closes off airflow from under the
hood beneath the black plastic plenum above the firewall.
Stand on your head in the passenger footwell, and look up through the grating
by the footwell light. You should be able to see the flap, spring and
controlling arm. Turn the ignition key to "on", and try different settings on
the climate control to see the flap move (or not). Likely, there's a spring
hanging down not attached on one end.
The spring is attached to a plastic plug in the flap which hard to reach.
The easy way to attach the new spring is to:
Remove the plug from the flap by twisting it a half turn.
Attach the spring with the plug in your hand.
Re-insert the plug in the flap.
Attaching the other end of the spring is usually not a problem.
In some cases it's possible to re-use the old spring. If the end loop is all
that broke off (typical), you can bend the next loop up and reattach with it.
If you think you've got a leaking heater core, you should smell coolant, and
the film left behind on the windshield may have a sweet taste. Not that I
recommend regular tasting of windshield film, or anything...
