4kq loses power when cold

My girlfriends 87' 4kq seems to have developed a new problem.  It starts
right up but sometimes (NOT all the time) it seems to have no power
untill the motor warms ALL the way up.  It comes and goes too. It will
not work, you'll floor it and No power, then all of a sudden its like a
turbo kicked in and it GOES.  Well, goes like it should anyhow.  Almost
like a Cyl is not firing but it sounds fine, no miss fire, just no
power.   It will do this sometimes even when the motor is 1/2 warmed
up.  REally annoying when you go to pull out into traffic to find
limited power.
    Any ideas on where to look for the problem.  Could it be a temp
switch that is sending funky signals to the computer sometimes unless it
is Totally Warmed up?
