I've got a similar problem with my '93 90. Sometimes the tach is
dead when first started. A whack on the dash fixes it right up.
Funny thing is, it never dies on the road; so I doubt it's a loose
connection in the cluster... A few pot holes and it would die
otherwise... Everything else in the cluster works fine.

One theory that I have is that it sticks (mechanically). Doubt that's
David's problem, though, since it happens when under way...
