You'd hope you could just buy the lens, but it may not work out that
way. I haven't had the good fortune of having to investigate this,
so I can't help too much.

Probably the steering damper: a shock-absorber like think attached
to the rack. I went through five of these before they fitted an updated
part which has been fine since (that was circa 1994, and all covered
by warantee). I think there is a TSB out on this.

I'm not sure if there's any real problem other than the noise. You
may want to call around and see how much it would cost to replace it
before coming to a conclusion.

We just covered this (again) last week: timing belt, both tension rollers,
water pump, thermostat and the serpentine accessory drive belt. Do it
now. Before you blow the motor to bits. Should come in somewhere in the
$600-$800 range for all that, including labor.
