I R&R my rear calipers annually and always find this problem with the
pins in spite of intact boots. I think it is due to heat expansion - the
heat of the caliper in use expands the air in the boot and forces a little
out. When the caliper cools, moist air is pulled into the boot.
Last year I filled the boots with silicone grease and greased the lip
grooves to try to seal the lips. I just finished my annual R&R. I found the
silicone grease in the boots had been baked to little blobs of crud and the
pins were running in their typical rusty silicone grease. Hmmm, back to the
drawing board....
