synthetic vs. regular

I've been debating to start using synthetic oil in my car. I just bought
an 86 5k tq recently, and it has 180k km on it. What are you guys
thinking about switching at this milage. My information is probably
outdated on the subject, but what I heard is that it's not a good idea
switching from regular motor oil to synthetic in engines that has been
using the regular kind.

I live in Alberta and it goes down to -30C in the winter, so having
better viscosity in cold wheather would be a great advantage.
