Thermo-time switch: intermitant?

I'm tracking down an intermitant hard starting problem. Car runs fine once
running.

Usual (lately anyway) cold start is 5-6-7 seconds of cranking. Pulled cold
start valve, grounded coil lead, cranked away, lovely pattern, 7ml output.
Re-install valve, darn thing fires at the touch of the key, five times in
succession. Went down tonight to wash car, 7 second crank to start. Went
and got test lamp, (got you now, damn it!) tried car again.
Immediate start.
Grrr....
So. Do thermo-time switches get intermitant? BTW, I also cleaned the
contact at the switch and injector and applied Stabilant-22a.

Thanks in advance.....
