What did I find?

I'm fixing some dash lights on my wife's 100 S and I found a multi-position
switch.
The casing on the switch says "SEUFFER" and on the plastic case that holds
the
switch it has 6 positions 1-2-3 for "benzin"  and 4-5-6 for diesel. OK - In
know what
benzin and diesel are but just because inquiring minds want to know what is
this switch
for and why the multiple positions?
