waking up oily

Re: my "new" '87 5kcstq; 121k mi.

After 2 months of happy ownership, I've noticed a wee bit of oil loss. I 
had the valve cover gasket replaced when I bought it (had a small leak 
there) and haven't noticed any leaks anywhere else.  It seems to 
burn/lose about a quart every 1k mi. or so.  I'm using Castrol Syntec 
10W-30 blend (half mineral/half synth).  

I'm thinking it's a leak since there's not excessive smoke out the 
exhaust--but then again, under my parking spot it's dry as a bone.  
Coco's confused!

What to check?  Engine runs beautifully, or so I think.  According to 
dash computer, bar is consistent 1.2-1.3max, mileage is avg. 26 mpg.

Totally unrelated: has anyone checked out the new Jetta's?  Pretty 
awesome for an entry level car!
