I just reattached my spring the other day. My plastic bar was not broken
either..somehow the spring had come undone..
so..
I first adjusted the hook on top with a pair of pliars..
then dangled it..
Then pulled it down to refasten...
It was a mild PIA..but not too bad. 
I was worried about breaking the plastic "bar" too..
but it held.
:)

But with my luck it will break next week...and I will get to do it all
over again.
