Update on Surging at 11psi (UrQ)

Thanks for all the suggestions (both public and private) on my 11psi surging
problem on my 85 UrQ.

I immediately ordered new plug wires (red Beru's from Blau... very strange...
plug numbers were reversed... #1 wire goes to #5 plug). Before they got here,
my surging started getting worse... and no longer only at high boost levels.
Replaced the wires, cap and rotor. Plugs (Bosch Tri-electrodes) were just over
10k, so I didn't replace them. Car ran better, but the surging and missing was
still there.

I pulled the fairly new IC-IM hose to inspect for leaks. None were found...
everything tight. Test drive confirms missing and surging are even worse.

I pull back into the garage to consider my next move. Then suddenly... I'm
getting a miss at idle! Determine that #1 plug now is not firing at all. Head
was too hot last night to pull the plug... so I waited until this morning
before work. Pulled the plug... no wear evident, but a cracked insulator.
Replaced the plug... missing and surging disappeared! I'm still not happy with
the flat acceleration at high boost levels, but my basic problems are gone.

I next plan to replace the other plugs and the older fuel filter and see if
that improves my high boost power levels. Any other suggestions? (Power is
VERY STRONG until about 12psi... then it drops back. I have more power at 11
psi than at 14 psi.)

Also, thanks to all the responses about looking at the car in Boston. For
personal reasons (basically I'd be sleeping in the garage with the car if I
bought it) I've decided to finish/sell some of my existing projects before
taking on another. Car is a 1977 Lotus Elite with 9000 original miles. Two
owners, new paint. Supposed to run and drive great... needing only minor
cosmetics. Price is $3500... about half what a normal (moderate mileage) Elite
goes for. I think it's a steal. I'll be glad to supply contact info to anyone
interested.
