well, the little slotted bit that the lever adjusts it with can break -
then you don't have the ability to close it properly.  The slot is
really part of the flap assembly, they are different < and >= 1985. 
Quickie fix - remove the grille and stuff the vent with some cloth. 
Better fix, get another flap (I once bought a junk 4kd for $30 to get
this part!) and put it in.  Even better fix, remove the dash and modify
the heater ductwork to send heat there!
