Re: AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID

Sam,
I think you're heading down the right path here. I'm not sure if any
updates were brought online in regards to the auto tranny, but I do believe
the early automatics presented some problems. Though I'm sure Mr. Andrew
Duane will have a thing or two to add to this subject.

I would recommend either the Redline or the Mobil 1 as superior products.
Before someone flames me, I do not have a Phd in this arena, I'm simply
going on rumor and innuendo. There I said it. Either way, synthetics are,
IMO, the way to go.

The bad news is, there is no auto transmission fluid dipstick delivered
with the car, so the DIY'er is out of luck. Simply pick up your fluid of
choice, drive it to a COMPETENT mechanic (dealership if necessary) and have
them change it out. I think Craig Niederst may want to chime in here; if
memory serves, something about an improperly filled auto transmission.

Good luck.

Subject: AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID

I have heard a complaint or too about slush boxes in A6s and how they
  might
not be, shall we say, as bulletproof as the rest of the drivetrain. We
recently purchased a 95Q with 37k on it with a slush box. It's the
  wife's
daily driver, had it been mine we would have hunted down an S6, but
  that's
another story. What transmission fluid are other auto owners running? I
would assume that synthetic would be best, but which brands do you run
  and
where do you get it? I would consider Redline, but also Mobil 1 if
  anyone
is running it and has good experiences with it. I have changed the oil
  in
the car over to fully synthetic Mobil 1. Does this car have a drain plug
  to
change Transmission fluid, or do you have to drop the pan? Please bear
  with
me as I've changed manual transmissions before, but never an auto. If
  there
is anything else I should know about changing the fluid that is specific
  to
an Audi automatic with Quattro, I would appreciate that also. (not that
  an
  Audi would have any quirks!)
