no instrument cluster lights

Some time ago, I asked for help on an intermittent problem with my
Instrument cluster lignts -- sometime they would all go out including
those on the temperature control panel. Suggestions included to check the
turn signal - head light - etc control, the dimmer control, ground wire
on the instrument cluster, glove box light and license plate light. I
had tried all except for the bad ground and the problem kept getting
worse until they did not work most all the time. This trip I told my
mechanic (Jeff at Maroney's in Scottdale Pennsylvania -- great used
parts source for audi (800 -245-7278) to pull the
instrument
cluster and check the ground. In checking the wiring diagram he noted
a relay call instrument cluster booster relay (VDO audi part
number is 447-919-080) supposedly located behind
the radio. He found it above the rear of the glove box behind a small
panel and sure enought it was bad. He replaced it and the dash lights
now work ever time. I hope this helps someone elses hunt for a solution
to this problem. ......I do need some input on replacing a standard seat
with a power seat on my daughter's car. Apparently there are different
tracks. I am going to post an inquirey as a separate e-mail and hope
some suggestions are forthcoming. Thank again to all of you for your
great suggestion on the instrument cluster problem. Georg K
