From what I recall of my old '86, you have to remove the pull handle
before you can remove the door panel. On my '91 there are allen screws at
the bottom of recesses under the handle. You loosen the screws and pull the
handle off. The metal mounting points for the handle are attached to the
door and protrude through the panel - the handle clamps to these mounts, so
the screws are vertical rather than horizontal, which you would expect if
the handle was screwed directly to the door. Sorry, I can't remember how
the '86 was mounted, but it probably was something similar.
