Heating Woes - 80q

Hope someone can help on this (88 80q with manual temp. controls).

The temp control dial does not seem to turn completely. Right
now it's blowing cold air. So, I decided to open up the center
dash and see what I could see. The bowden cable attached to the
temp control seemed ok but the rotary switch turn freely in one
direction (left and cold) but not the other (right and warm).
So I pulled on the bowden cable and it snapped off the other end
- just when I was thinking that I should follow the cable to the
other end. So, a couple of questions:

a) why did'nt I follow the cable to the other end?
b) where does the other end fit?

I've removed the storage compartment under the steering wheel and I can see
what I think is the heater box. I can see another bowden cable attached
to some control but I can't figure out where the cable for the
temp control flap goes. I'm using a Bentley, but the diagrams
don't seem to be making much sense just yet.

Do I have to remove the heater control box or should I be able
to re-attach without removing? Also, I'm hoping that replacing
the cable will resolve my problem since the cable seems a little
bent (correct?).

Even when I turn the temp control rotary switch, the switch
does not seem to turn freely. Should the switch turn freely in
both directions if the other end of the cable is disconnected?

Any ideas greatly appreciated (it's starting to get cold).

Thanks
