Steve - at the insistence of my wife (now I *didn't* say "nagging" . . .) I
finally joined AARP (gotta be over 50) and wound up with Hartford Insurance
as part of their group policy for cars and homeowners.
Price on two cars (86 5ks and 91 323 Mzda), two grown-up drivers, clean
records, went from $1,600/yr at Nationwide (best price I found after
several years of AGGRESSIVE shopping) down to $850/yr, same coverage.
W/S subsequently wound up broken on 5ks, they paid without a single quibble
- NO problem at all, about $500, no rate increase. Zero deductable (yes, I
was a whole 50 cents out of pocket for a Coke while I waited).
A few weeks ago, I called and asked Hartford what ACV was on my 5ks - they
said $2,500 - which is what they would give me if it were totalled. I said
that I would be reluctant and in fact downright unwilling to sell the car
for that since I have LOTS of work in it - we settled on $4,000 as ACV, and
the increase in the premium was a whole two dollars a year!
NOW: I have previously been contacted by a number of list members about
AARP's opinion on gun control - I DID check this out and determined
conclusively that AARP HAS *NO* official position on this subject - what
they did was take a poll of their members and report the results - they DO
NOT lobby "for" or "against" on this particular subject.
PLEASE - if you have any comments on this last item or want further
information, contact me OFF LIST - I only mentioned this because the last
time I brought up AARP here I found the reaction to this subject quite
remarkable, and it had NOTHING to do with insurance!
Best Regards, and happy and safe holidays,
Mike Arman
