actually my logic may have been a little murky here - the dropped tach
doesn't guarantee it's just ignition, the working tach implies that it
*isn't* the ignition.  And as the years go by (my references are pretty
old cars...) you just have to ignore me.  Quite likely a car without
fuel will abandon the ignition.

anyway, we're just hypothesizing at this point, I hope the original
questioner gets to the bottom of his problem!
