ruth buzzy fuel pump

I, too, have a pump buzz.  Words of confusion/wisdom from my guru 
mechanic:

He says that certain years audis' fuel tanks had a weird coating on the 
inside.  This coating chips off and gets in the pump, making it 
buzz--but the pump works fine.  So don't fix it.

THEN he said, if your car is hi-mileage, replace it, no big whoop.  BUT 
that new pump will eventually buzz soon enough.

This in re: '87 5kcsq.  So I haven't replaced mine.  

If the car is running in the middle of the forest and no one's around to 
hear it, does it make a buzzing sound?
