I run into the same problem while upgrading the head unit in my 5KT. The
old Blaupunkt used as a stock head unit on those cars has low output power,
something like 4x7W, so a cheap amplified crossover is used to drive rear
speakers. Since newer head units usually have significantly higher output
power (like 4x25W) and the amplifier on my car was working intermitently, I
decided to get rid of it and replaced it with a passive (non-amplified)
crossover.
