Yeah, it's not a procedure that I would recommend on an outwardly
healthy car.  I used it on the Passat, which was the victim of 'black
sludge' - the result of the oil simply being topped up and not changed
by the servicing garage.  Some of the breathers were completely
blocked by this stuff - the long metal tube that comes up the side of
the block and the cam cover itself I actually burned off and repainted.

The procedure for the stuff I used was to get the engine hot, drain the
oil, fit a new el cheapo filter, and pour in 1/2 a can (2.5 litres) of
this flushing oil.  It's clear, like glycerine.  Idle the engine for
15 minutes, dump it, change the filter and repeat.   Then drain and
refill with normal oil.

As Brett says, the first load to come out brings all manner of nasties
with it.  Mine was utterly black.  I let it settle, then drained it off
for disposal and found about half a teaspoon of grit in the bottom of
the oil change bucket.
