Same thing with automatics. A used 3sp 087 tranny for 5K/100/200,
guaranteed to work can be had for $250-$350 over here. Rebuilders ask over
$1000 to rebuild your old box - and I've heard horror stories about people
who had to return the car to the shop several times because the
"specialists" couldn't get it right.
