If the battery sits inside the car as on the 5000 series I don't advise
ignoring the vent tube. I found out that battery acid gases were slowly
eating the paint and metal in my '80 5000. Luckily I caught it in time
before the battery fell thru the floorpan! Always hook up that vent tube
and dump the corrosives outside the car as Audi intended. Even the 4000
series have vent tubes even though the battery sits in the engine compartment.
