Professionally, I send $20-25k per year to my firm's attorney so I know all
about extra charges.  That said, though, our attorney is pretty good about
this ... she doesn't charge us for brief telephone calls, often sends us
copies of her notes rather than charging us to have it rewritten into a
letter, etc.

The key, I think, is to shop around a bit since there are plenty of honest,
ethical people out there.  It's also the reason I use an independent repair
shop rather than a dealer when I don't work on my car myself since they don't
have a service writer to pay commissions to in the first place!
