Yes, that just reminded me.The vacuum advance was down on my car as well.
The unit was not holding any vacuum (probably the diaphram) and had to be replaced.
If it helps any VW vacuum advance unit will bolt straight on. I was looking for used
oned at junk yard and found a VW Fox with a good one. Surprising however was a fact
that 5 out of 6 I looked at were not working as well.
