Clutch saga continues...(this one is long)
As I posted Monday, bleeding has helped my clutch some. There is now a kinda
funky feel and there is a fluid leak at the MC. I suspect it is gone and will
change it and bleed again. The feel is hard to describe but the pedal pressure
required is still fairly light (a good thing I gather).
I may still have two problems though. There is now a nasty raspy sound about
5% of the time (or less...very intermittent at this point) when the clutch is
disengaged. It also seemed that this morning I needed to shift slower than
usual into second and third or there would be a nasty grind (and I do
typically match revs pretty well when I shift). Kinda tells me I am still
getting only partial disengagement and I should start to prepare for the
worst.
Because of all this, my worst fears continue (throw-out bearing). Last night I
was looking at the book-o-Bentley and noticed that the "plastic sleeve" went
away in 3/86 (or something like that).
Anyway...reviewing the steps required to do the trans R&R and clutch it
doesn't look that bad. I do have some questions that will help me to decide to
attack it myself or bit the bullet. Problem is I can't find any good local
wrenches who will allow me to bring in my own parts and they all want to
charge retail for them.
Questions are:
1. My fiance's father has a cement standing-room pit in his garage. If I were
to rent a tranny jack with appropriate lift height can this job be done
leaving the car on all four wheels? If so, it seems that would be way better
than the jackstand/floorjack method.
2. Does anyone have a complete list of parts that one should do while in
there? I assume clutch disc, pressure plate, throw-out bearing, sleeve, rear
crank seal, and may as well do clutch slave and hose while they are easy to
get at. What all else? Parts will come from TPC and/or Linda.
3. How much time should I allow to do this job? (Psst...any local listers
wanna lend a hand? hint hint)
All BTDT's, condolences, etc. will be greatly appreciated. I truly do not have
the grand or so to plunk down for a shop to do this job for me right now.
Isn't that the way it always works though?
TIA
