Eric,
make sure all the strut mounting bolts are tight.  Every time
I've had the front struts out, this has happened a few weeks later.
Each time, I've found one or more of the lower mounting bolts
were a little loose.
OTOH, the symptom was more of a "clunk" than a pop.
