Re: Elusive and Rare MB 500E (non-Audi)
I looked at one before purchasing a second 1991 Audi 200tq. They are real
nice, quite fast, and expensive. They were assembled by Porsche, but MB and
AMG supplied all the parts. The motor is out of the big S600, and the trans
was out of a 12 cyl. MB. To fit it all in the car, the firewall and the
trans hump had to be modified, and the front frame widened. I did not buy
the car because the front seats are moved outboard about 2" to clear the
trans hump and I am big enough that my shoulders hit the B pillar. As I
recall, ther were only several hundred per year brought in for several
years.
All of the above is from my recollection from about six months ago. The car
i looked at had 89k miles, and could be purchased for $35,000, which was a
great price for a clean, rare car
