I'm thinking Pat is right here.  Without anything in writing, and without
any means to prove you paid him anything, i.e. receipts etc., I don't think
you have much recourse.  If the guy is a licensed business owner, you might
be able to turn him over to local bureaus, but I'm guessing this guys not a
legit businessman to begin with.  That's a horrible situation, and I guess
if nothing else, maybe other listers will use this information to their
advantage in the future.  It's too bad that you can't have faith in people
"doing the right thing" anymore.

I would assume Unless you have a written contract with this person, or a
witness to the a verbal agreement your would be SHOL.  I'll bet your
attorney would tell you that if you did have a case you would have to
weigh wether attorney fees/court costs would be more that what you would
get.  Does the person have any assets?
